Mountain Bike Camp
Ralph & Rose Hitman camp located in Harriman State Park.
Recycle-A-Bicycle (RAB) staff and summer youth students went mountain biking at Henry Street Settlement's Ralph Camp & Rose Hitman located in Harriman State Park. This was a ride sponsored by Bike New York and Fuji Bicycles. We closed the Dumbo and Avenue C retail shops to enjoy a day of cycling and swimming.
The group met at the Dumbo Shop at 8:30 a.m.,then travelled to the New York Cyclists shop in Harlem. Fuji bicycles were loaded on a van and we drove an hour to Lake Stahahe in Harriman State Park. We hooked up our bikes and were ready to ride by noon.
Frandy, our mountain bike instructor, led the way. We cycled around the lake, out on Park roads, and over some steep hills. Karen, Rich and Jared helped people perfect their shifting skills. Safiya and Jumel spotted a deer when they missed a turn in the route. Safiya was glad it wasn't a bear.
After bike touring, RAB staff and students went for a swim in the lake to cool down after the hard climbing. Michael suspected that the fish might have enjoyed swiming more than us: they were nibbling on his leg! On the way home,we stopped for a late lunch and soft ice cream. Remi, the skinniest of everyone, ate the most. It was a great way to wind down from a day of outdoor activity.
Overall, it was a fantastic trip. We gained experience in mountain biking, got to know one another better, and enjoyed the beautiful countryside of Harriman State, the lake and hills."It's was great" said Sandra. It was so much fun, we plan on doing it again next year. Karen Overton: Executive Director cruisers in. She was also our ride sweep.
