Internship Program

Students get hands-on experience in the RAB shop.

If you are a student between the ages of 14 and 18 and you think bicycles are cool, come learn more about them by becoming a Recycle-A-Bicycle intern! During our internship program you will learn how to repair and maintain bicycles while assisting in the operation of a small non-profit business. This includes knowing how to completely overhaul a bicycle, diagnosing basic mechanical problems, doing a bicycle tune-up, assisting in bicycle collections, maintaining bicycle inventory, operating a cash register, and working the floor as a salesperson. Our interns have gone on to work in our retail stores and other bike stores throughout the city.

Proposed Schedule

We follow the NYC school semester schedule. You will start your internship with an orientation/training period in our new DUMBO classroom. The available schedule you can choose from is on the page titled "Information Sheet" linked below. You may set your schedule within the time slots available but not come for less than two hours on any given day. The intern supervisor will decide when participants have enough training to be directed to one of our two stores where you will be able to continue with your training in the retail environment.

You may also choose to enroll in our "Earn-A-Bike" Program, in which volunteer work in the shop outside of scheduled time is credited toward acquisition of a bicycle. Interns will also be encouraged to volunteer at different events during the Spring in order to earn some hours as well.

Program Overview

  • Some days interns will be working on bikes, using tools and getting dirty, other days the class will be held in the classroom or outside.
  • Interns will be evaluated on their mechanical work and participation.
  • Interns will keep timesheets for both their internship and "Earn-A-Bike" hours.
  • Interns will organize and participate in an event, such as a bike sale, at the end of their internship as part of their internship requirements.
