Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Can you donate a bike to my raffle?
Answer: If you are hosting a free bike raffle as part of a street fair or other event, we can usually donate children's bicycles to be raffled off. In our experience, raffles like this work best when the children have to do something: complete an bike safety class or a fix a flat class, to earn their raffle ticket. Please note that, while we can help identify low cost helmets, we don't have helmets available for donation. Our cover photo shows a few happy kids who won bicycles at Sustainable South Bronx's 2006 festival.
Question: How do I donate a bicycle?
Answer: You can bring it to one of our locations or ship it to us. Decide for yourself if it is reusable. If you want to give us a good bike, that's OK and it is tax-deductible. Pickups are sometimes available; see our donate page for details.
Question: I am interested in getting a bike. What do I do?
Answer: Stop by either of our retail locations. We'll be happy to answer your questions. We get our share of unique bikes, so you might be surprised to find what you are looking for. Remember, we ship to anywhere in the U.S.
Question: Will you buy my used bike?
Answer: Sorry, we don't buy bikes. We're happy to give you a tax-deductible receipt for your donation, though.
Question: What about a trade-in? Do you do trade-ins?
Answer: Nope. We're happy to accept donations, and you'll find that our used bikes for sale are quite reasonably priced, but we can't take trade-ins.
Question: Do you need volunteers?
Answer: Sure! We have Ladies Night every Tuesday night and Volunteer Night every Wednesday night at the DUMBO location. People of all skill levels are welcome. This is the best way to get to know us. We can also always use volunteers who are good with kids or are skilled mechanics or graphic designers. If you want to volunteer outside of our volunteer nights, get in touch and tell us a bit about yourself.
Question: Do you take interns?
Answer: Yup! We take high school and college interns. Potential areas of work might include communication (web, writing), basic mechanics, and environmental education. We also offer arts internships. High school students should call our DUMBO office for more information. College students should send a one page resume and letter of interest to hiring@recycleabicycle.org
Question: I don't have an old bike to donate. How can I help?
Answer: Good question! Look at our donation page; we have a list of other things we need at the moment. You can also make a tax-deductible cash donation from the donation page.
Question: I have a basement full of bicycles. What should I do?
Answer: Please contact us to find out how arrange a pickup.
Question: I am looking for parts for a vintage bike. Can you help?
Answer: Yes, we get old bikes and salvage usable parts. Stop by either of our retail locations or call and we can probably help you find something close to what you are looking for.
Question: Do you have any high-end parts for my road bike?
Answer: We might. Call or stop by one of our retail locations if you know exactly what you want.
